I wrote an essay. I'm cool... the last part is the best...
The excerpt from Lord Byron’s Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage contrasts the destructiveness of man with the beauty and power of nature. He uses different poetic devises such as alliteration, personification and direct contrast throughout the poem.Occasional use of simile is included in the poem.
The words that are used to describe man and nature show the contrast between them. Man is described negatively by using words such as ruin, ravage, vile strength, and destruction. Nature, on the other hand, is described with more positive words such as pleasure, rapture, music, bosom, and playful. This gives the idea of man as a bad thing and nature as a good thing. This section even communicates that although nature destroys man and man destroys nature, man deserves to be destroyed.
One poetic devise included in the poem is alliteration.Alliteration may be used either to emphasize an idea or to create a melodic feel. For example “pleasure in the pathless woods” in line 1 emphasizes the poets view on nature. This is reiterated in line 10 with the phrase “deep and dark blue ocean.”An example of alliteration used to create a melodic feel is in line 18 where you find the phrase, “unknell’d, uncoffin’d and unknown.”
Personification is also used in the poem as a way to turn nature into a creature that can have qualities comparable to those of man.An example of this is the phrase “and music in its roar” on line 4.Here it refers to the sea as a creature capable of roaring. In line 8 the phrase “to mingle with the universe” gives the idea that the universe is a crowd that one can mingle within.Nature is given a more powerful role in line 20 with the phrase“thou dost arise and shake him from thee.” This line gives the idea that the sea can stand up and shake man from itself.
Lord Byron uses different poetic devises such as alliteration, personification and direct contrast throughout the poem to compare the damage caused by man and the splendor and power of nature. The poem gives a positive picture of nature and a negative picture of man through use of words.Poetic devices are also used to place emphasis on ideas and to give rhythm and melody to the piece.Nature is also personified in an attempt to use it as a character. All of these things contribute to the message that the poet is trying to convey.
